Washington Island Information
We appreciate the special challenges that come with having surgery when you live on an island. We will make every effort to try to coordinate your care at times that work for you. Sometimes, due to availability or timing, we may not be able to get all of your Pre-Op or Post-Op appointments at our Fish Creek location. Please realize that some appointments must take place at the Sturgeon Bay location.
Our Sister Bay Rehab staff is aware of the ferry schedule throughout the year and will attempt to coordinate your rehab appointments with the ferry.
Some former Washington Island patients have made the following suggestions:
- Consider the ferry schedule available at various times of the year when choosing your surgery date.
- Bring ice packs in a cooler to your rehab appointments so you can use them on the car and ferry ride home.
- If you are placed on Coumadin (warfarin) for anticoagulation you will need labs on Mondays and Thursdays. Coordinate your rehab appointments on those days to decrease the number of trips you have to make off the island.
- Some patients actually rent a condo on the peninsula for the first week or two after surgery just to simplify their travel. Dependent upon the time of year and the cost of the short-term rental, it may be more cost effective than traveling back and forth on the ferry several times per week.
