Highlands Home

6165 Bluff Ledge Road
Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235

The "Highlands," built in 2007, was so named "because of our love of all things Scottish."  The owners purchased this spacious (approximately 4,500 square feet) Craftsman style home from the original owner in November 2016 and completed the remodel and additions in November 2017.  The home has 3 stories, 4 bedrooms, 4½ bathrooms, great room, home theater, game room, quilting and writing retreat, and seasonal tower room converted to create a year-round office.  The owner's daughter suggested that they "should pick a spot that our family knows and loves."  Having vacationed many times in Door County, after 18 months of searching, the owners fell in love with the uniqueness of the "Highlands."  Designed and built, and then remodeled by local builders, the "Highlands" displays many Craftsman elements—locally sourced stone inside and out, steep rooflines, corbels, clipped gables, a richness of new and reclaimed wood details, leaded windows and, amazingly, a tower.  For authenticity, even the eastern white pine floors have square head nails.  The first order of business was to lighten, brighten and open up the house to bring forward the feel of their old California home and to reflect a welcoming environment for family and friends.  As you tour the home, notice the natural light and the Quoizel leaded glass chandelier in the great room and original light fixtures by Craig Richard of Old California Lighting in Orange, California.  "Much of the lighting borrows heavily from the 20th century historic Gamble House.  Thistles are a recurring theme throughout the home—see if you can spot them!"  The home's west exposure provides sunsets from the balcony that rival those of California.  The landscaping is a work in progress, hopefully transitioning to native plants.  This home demonstrates a definitive love of the Craftsman style.

C-Side Home

7165 Horseshoe Bay Rd
Egg Harbor, WI 54209

In September of 2015, the owners, who had been visiting the peninsula for 25 years, found the perfect plot of land and hired a local builder to design and build their dream home.  Stephanie Bunda of designworks, along with the owner's wife, were instrumental in creating this architectural masterpiece. Best described as a Lake Home, "C-side" was completed in August of 2017 and boasts 9 rooms including a sun-porch, kitchen, living room, powder room, office, master suite with bathroom and closets, laundry room and two guest bedrooms with baths.  A three-car detached garage with a breezeway completes the construction.  This outstanding home faces west to capture the spectacular beauty of the Bay of Green Bay.  Design features include a tongue and groove hip ceiling, a reclaimed wood ceiling in the sun porch, shiplap paneling and a metal wrap around on the Door County fieldstone fireplace that dominates the main living room, just to name a few.  This truly amazing Door County home incorporates more Door County fieldstone, planking, cedar beams and archway on the exterior of the house to give it that "Door County" feel.  The work by John Meredith and Lakeshores landscape & design inc. can only be described as transformative.  They took a barren plot of land with an outstanding view and produced a beautiful nature scape incorporating the existing terrain and flora while protecting the natural beauty around it.  Many of the boulders that were incorporated into the landscape were discovered during the excavation of the home's foundation.  Because of their love of Door County and care for the environment, the owners incorporated two rain gardens to capture water run-off and reduce wastewater flow to the lake.  This amazing house is Door County through and through and is a wonderful model of the owners' desire to protect the natural beauty of the Door County shorefront.

Maple Landing Home

9309 Cottage Row
Fish Creek, WI 54212

The current owners purchased their home in July 2015, and classify it as a "Mid-Century Modern, ranch cottage" which is located on picturesque Cottage Row, one the oldest streets in Fish Creek.  It is situated on 2½ acres consisting of two adjacent lots on the water or 410 feet of water frontage and a lot across the road.  The home was built in 1959 for the Kunzelmann family of Milwaukee and has a spectacular view of the Bay of Green Bay.  The 2,200 square foot home has 2 bedrooms, 2½ baths, living room, dining room, family room, and kitchen.  There is also an attached extra room and stone patio as well as a matching two stall garage and shed. Mrs. Kunzelmann was an interior designer, and Mr. Kunzelmann was the owner of Kunzelmann-Esser Furniture Store.  One of the unique features of this home is that most of the furniture in the main living areas is original to the home and, in some cases, has been rebuilt and recovered.  All kitchen appliances, cabinets and bathroom fixtures are also original to the home.  The gardens, an eclectic mix of native flowers, plants, grasses, and trees including varieties of many different native plants were established in 2016 by Terrie Sass, landscaper (gardener-horticulturist).  Three Maple trees have been added to the property lately to provide more shade and add to the overall beauty of the yard.  As you amble through the gardens, be sure to look for two teak horses in the grass garden and take notice of the beautiful fire pit and chairs that provide a relaxing atmosphere for soaking in spectacular sunsets on the Bay.  The garage, dock, and shed were added on the property in 2016.  This property is a nostalgic step back into the '50s you are sure to enjoy.

Nature's Window Home

10493 N Orchard Road
Ephraim, WI 54234

Carlson Erickson Builders, Inc. constructed “Nature’s Window” in 2008, in the modern Craftsman style.  The builder worked closely with the owner and Door County resident, Clayton Moore—whose father, by the way, played the Lone Ranger on television!  The striking landscaping does an amazing job incorporating the spectacular views of Green Bay and Horseshoe Island into their design plan.  This is 4,300 square feet, 10 room home with 5 bedrooms, 5 baths and a separate laundry and mudroom.  There are stunning walnut floors throughout the first floor.  Displayed in the three-sided sunroom is life-sized Sturgeon Bay Sturgeon, by artist Cal Bonnivier, featuring a collection of famous paintings by Vincent Van Gogh and auctioned in 2002 for the Door County Land Trust.  The artwork and crafts of renowned local artists, including Bob Bentley, Rick Brawner, Judi Ekholm and Jim Leatham, are prominently displayed throughout the home.

Crosswinds Cottage

12052 County Rd NP
Ellison Bay, WI 54210

The owners describe their cottage home as "a comfortable place to share with family and friends and to enjoy the solitude of the quiet beauty that is Door County."  This lovely home, nestled on 5 acres in Ellison Bay, presents the perfect place for its owners and guests to enjoy a quiet place to work and rest while listening to the birds and enjoying the breathtaking night sky.  Crosswinds, a Salt Box style, was constructed in 2000, and remodeled in 2012 and 2018.  The main house has 4 bedrooms, 2 baths, kitchen, breakfast room, living room, den, partially finished basement, and 3-season porch.  The original owners, along with Myron Beard, builder, designed the 1,800 square foot main house that is complemented by the Carriage House.  Originally a wood working shop for the previous owner, the Carriage House was remodeled by local builders and the owners, and it adds another 1,330 square feet of living space.  The Carriage house features shiplap, beams and hardwood floors and consists of a large family room with small kitchenette, bath, and bunkroom for sleeping 6.  Most of the indoor décor reflects the owners' interests, history, and work.  Almost all of the antiques have been sourced in the Door County area—even harvesting wood directly from a standing barn for the basement walls! The fireplace beam is from an old barn in Bailey's Harbor, while the card catalog bar reflects the owners' past jobs as educators.  The owners also built and/or painted some of the furniture.  A love for older furnishings and décor is obvious, as well as bringing in as much nature as possible. There are rocks of all sizes everywhere—each one representing a moment that someone noticed and marked by bringing home the rock for a happy memory.  Plants are found in every room to extend the indoor/outdoor feel of the home. With no "original" landscaping, the owners began with a blank slate.  They designed and built all of the raised garden beds and fence, and planted all of the foundation hydrangeas, perennial beds, annuals and meadow.  This home and its gardens, inspired by English cottage gardens and old-fashioned New England kitchen gardens, are truly a labor of love of family and Door County.
